Choose Cursor if inline completion, visual editing and native multi-provider model choice anchor your day. Choose Claude Code if you want delegated work in your existing editor and composable terminal automation.
Both now have local, visual and cloud agent workflows. The useful comparison separates four choices: where you work, how the agent operates, which model answers and who bills the usage.
Prices and product details were checked on September 24, 2026. Below, we compare plans, costs at three consumption levels with an editable calculator, models, agent quality, team controls and how to run both tools together.

The difference is your review workflow
Cursor: editing and agent management in one product
Cursor combines its editor with the Agents Window, an agent-first interface for local, cloud and remote work. You can switch back to the editor or keep both open. Its CLI supports interactive sessions and non-interactive automation, so you can also use Cursor outside its editor.
Cloud Agents, formerly called Background Agents, work in isolated VMs. They build, test and interact with applications through a desktop or browser.
Start here if your recurring work involves reviewing diffs, making small visual adjustments and moving between manual edits and agent tasks. Tab adds inline completion to that workflow, with its own allowance separate from agent usage.
Claude Code: delegated work in your existing editor
Claude Code reads files, edits code and runs commands through terminal, IDE, desktop and browser surfaces. Its VS Code extension supports Cursor, and a JetBrains plugin is available. Desktop adds visual diff review and parallel sessions; web and mobile provide access to cloud sessions.
Start here if keeping your current editor matters, or if you want to compose agent work with scripts and terminal tools. Both products support visual review and automation. The deciding question is where you want to inspect, interrupt and steer the work.
Browser verification needs a billing-path check. Cursor's Browser tool inspects and tests applications. Claude Code's native Chrome integration requires a direct Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan and sign-in through /login; API-key or gateway-token authentication keeps it disabled. Independently configured browser MCP tools, such as Playwright MCP, have their own setup and access requirements.

Pricing: the seat price is only the first line
Current individual plans
These are US monthly web prices before tax.
| Subscription level | Cursor | Claude with Claude Code |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Pro: $20/month | Pro: $20/month |
| Higher capacity | Pro+ (Pro Plus): $60/month | Max 5x: $100/month |
| Highest listed individual tier | Ultra: $200/month | Max 20x: $200/month |
Sources: Cursor's detailed plan documentation, Claude Pro pricing and Claude Max pricing. Cursor also has a free Hobby plan with limited agent access; Claude's Free plan does not include Claude Code.
Monthly pools versus session and weekly limits
Cursor's paid individual plans have two independent monthly pools: Cursor Models and Other Models. Third-party selection draws from Other Models at the model's API rate. After included usage, you can enable on-demand billing or upgrade. Unused usage does not roll over.
The current public Cursor pricing documentation does not state the dollar size of each included pool. An exact subscription break-even calculation needs those allowances. Tables based on 500 premium requests or historical credit amounts describe older plans.
Claude Pro and Max use five-hour session allowances plus weekly limits. Capacity depends on model, context and features. Max 5x and 20x describe relative Pro per-session capacity, rather than API credit balances. Claude conversations and Claude Code share usage. Separately purchased usage credits allow continuation at standard API rates, with monthly spending controls.
Claude Pro does not include Claude Console API usage. A gateway credential in Claude Code bills the account behind the gateway instead of your subscription. Keep that distinction clear when comparing a flat monthly plan with a token bill.
API and BYOK costs at three consumption levels
Fixing model consumption gives us an inspectable calculation. Claude Sonnet 5.5's published prices are $2 per million uncached input tokens, $2.50 for five-minute cache writes, $0.20 for cache reads and $10 for output. Let I, W, R and O be millions of tokens in those four separate categories:
Provider consumption V = 2I + 2.5W + 0.2R + 10OCached tokens belong in their cache category; do not count them again as uncached input. Totals include main-agent, subagent and helper calls, with billed reasoning included in output.
Assume equal monthly token consumption in both tools, standard global Sonnet 5.5 pricing and five-minute cache writes, excluding taxes, regional premiums, fast mode, server-tool fees, cloud hosting and other add-ons.
| Consumption level | Uncached input | Cache writes | Cache reads | Output | Provider cost V |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 1M | 1M | 10M | 0.2M | $8.50 |
| Medium | 5M | 5M | 50M | 1M | $42.50 |
| Heavy | 20M | 20M | 200M | 4M | $170.00 |
For medium usage, 5 × $2 + 5 × $2.50 + 50 × $0.20 + 1 × $10 = $42.50.
The Cursor rows below retain a $20 Pro seat for editor benefits and Tab. Claude Code uses standalone API billing without a Pro seat.
| Billing setup | Light | Medium | Heavy |
|---|---|---|---|
Claude Code, direct API: V | $8.50 | $42.50 | $170.00 |
Cursor Pro + direct provider BYOK: $20 + V | $28.50 | $62.50 | $190.00 |
Claude Code + Requesty PAYG: 1.05V | $8.93 | $44.63 | $178.50 |
Cursor Pro + Requesty key: $20 + 1.05V | $28.93 | $64.63 | $198.50 |
Individual Cursor BYOK requests do not draw from included usage. Requesty PAYG adds 5% to provider consumption, without a platform seat fee or minimum spend. For example, $42.50 × 1.05 = $44.625, displayed as $44.63.
Subscriptions can offer better value when the work fits their allowances. Use the calculator to inspect the API path, then compare it with your subscription bill and completed work.

Models and context: same Claude, different agent
Cursor offers native multi-provider choice, including Claude Sonnet 5.5, Opus 5.5 and Gemini models, alongside Composer 2.5 and Grok models in its Cursor Models pool. Check the current Cursor model list for native availability.
Claude Code's official native choices are Claude families. On the Anthropic API, the current sonnet and opus aliases resolve to Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5. Other providers can resolve aliases differently. Sonnet 5.5 requires Claude Code v2.1.284 or later.
Choosing the same Claude model does not make the agents identical. Instructions, file retrieval, tool definitions, permissions, reasoning settings and context compaction shape the work. That surrounding software is the agent harness.
Requesty documents non-Claude model access through its Anthropic-compatible endpoint. Anthropic does not support routing Claude Code to non-Claude models through any gateway. Evaluate tool use, context handling and feature compatibility before adopting an alternate model.
Large codebases: retrieval matters more than a window headline
Both document million-token context options for Sonnet 5.5: Cursor's model page and Claude Code's model configuration. Useful context depends on what the agent retrieves and retains.
Cursor Instant Grep builds and queries its search index locally, without uploading paths or code to build that index. File contents can still enter model requests when the agent opens a match. You can also reference context explicitly.
Claude Code searches and reads relevant files through tools. Its context includes conversation, file contents, tool results and instructions. Automatic compaction can lose detailed early instructions. Put enduring workflow requirements in instruction files.
For a large repository, test whether the agent finds the right implementation and tests before editing. More context capacity does not fix retrieval of the wrong files.
Agent quality: practitioner signals and a repository trial
We found no current controlled, artifact-backed head-to-head that establishes a universal winner.
The 2026 accounts below identify strengths and frustrations worth checking in your workflow. Dates matter: January and April reports describe earlier builds, while interface preferences can carry into a later trial.
Cursor: review visibility, context and limits
- Visual review and Tab: in June, HN user jjice preferred highlighted changes for review; developer mjrbrennan praised Tab and reported missing it after switching to VS Code.HN: reviewHN: TabHN: follow-up
- Context beside the code: in September, PaperComet1t1 described giving Cursor a folder of ticket requirements, documentation and images, then inspecting touched files and steering changes during execution.Reddit: context and review
- Allowance pressure: in April, beginner Ok-Junket-2971 praised the app Cursor produced but reported exhausting successive plans. They also disclosed inefficient prompting and noncoding agent work.Reddit: usage frustration
- Domain verification: in January, scientific programmer gilub05 reported conversion, integral-bound, time-zone and interpolation errors while using both tools. They wanted clearer task-level model and token visibility in Cursor.Cursor forum: scientific work
Claude Code: delegation, scripting and review work
- Scriptable workflows: in April, germanheller valued Claude Code's hooks and its process interface for chaining work together. Cursor also supports hooks and a CLI.Reddit: terminal composition
- Multi-repo delegation: in May, shoegraze used Opus planning, Sonnet subagents and worktrees for separate PRs across repositories. Intermediate outputs were harder to check, leaving them unsure about the pace improvement.Reddit: delegated PR workflow
- Perceived subscription value: in June, renjimen moved from Cursor to Claude Code's VS Code extension for frequent frontier-model use and found the extension experience similar enough to keep GUI review.HN: extension and pricing preference
- Planning still needs review: in April, LowBetaBeaver asked for section-by-section plan detail to check abstraction and code reuse before execution. Delegation moved part of their review work earlier.Reddit: plan review
In a September 2, 2026 report, Simon Willison described using Claude Code with Fable 5.1 to build a system-prompt tracking repository and its automation, with a published transcript and a successful update workflow. The transcript records an ordering bug and a discarded patch before correction, showing why verification belongs in delegated work.
For a historical matched-model example, Haihai's March 2025 Rails experiment found Cursor useful for documentation search and preferred Claude Code's incremental permissions and test/git workflow across three tasks using Claude 3.7.
Run a one-week trial on your own repository
Choose a focused UI change, a regression-test bug fix, a cross-file refactor, a dependency update and an unfamiliar integration. Add a multi-repository task if it belongs in your work. Define acceptable outcomes before either agent runs.

Rules, hooks, MCP, skills and subagents
Both support persistent instructions, event-triggered hooks, MCP tools, skills and subagents with separate context.
| Capability | Cursor convention | Claude Code convention |
|---|---|---|
| Project instructions | .cursor/rules/*.mdc, AGENTS.md | CLAUDE.md, .claude/rules/, AGENTS.md |
| Hooks | .cursor/hooks.json | Claude settings hook configuration |
| Skills | .agents/skills/, .cursor/skills/ | Skills and plugins |
| Subagents | .cursor/agents/, compatibility locations | Custom subagents |
| External tools | MCP | MCP |
Sources: Cursor rules, hooks, skills, subagents and MCP; Claude Code's extension feature overview and instruction-file support.
Port the intent, then check the schema. Cursor hooks use event names such as preToolUse; Claude uses names such as PreToolUse. Instructions guide a model, while hooks trigger checks at defined events. Keep tool permissions and sandboxing alongside both. Cursor warns that terminal commands and MCP tools can read ignored files, so ignore files are not a security boundary.
Team controls: compare the plan and data path
Business prices and administrative controls
| Buying detail | Cursor | Claude Code through Claude plans |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly team seats | Standard $40; Premium $120 | Standard $25; Premium $125 |
| Included team usage | Per-user pools; Premium has 5x Standard usage | Per-member allowances; both seat types include Code |
| Team identity and analytics | SAML/OIDC SSO, centralized admin, analytics | SSO, centralized admin, analytics, basic admin roles |
| Enterprise additions | SCIM, pooled usage, model/MCP controls, audit logs | SCIM, audit logs, retention controls, advanced roles, APIs |
| Extra-spend controls | Team-wide cap; member limits on Enterprise | Organization and user spend controls |
Sources: Cursor Teams pricing, Cursor Enterprise model controls, Cursor privacy and governance, Claude Team and Claude Enterprise.
Claude Team's annual prices are $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat per month, billed annually; the table uses monthly billing. Claude Team requires at least two members. Cursor's self-serve Teams allowance does not transfer between members; pooled usage is an Enterprise feature.
Claude Team Standard now includes Claude Code. Premium buys more capacity.
New Claude Enterprise contracts charge an annual seat fee plus consumption at standard API rates. Token usage is not included in the seat fee. Older seat models remain relevant until renewal. The fetched public documentation did not expose a numeric current Enterprise seat price; request a current quote.
Review two Cursor billing settings before rollout:
- Teams on-demand usage is enabled by default. Enable Only Admins Can Edit Usage Settings to prevent members changing team limits or on-demand settings. Enforcement can briefly overshoot a limit; raising it can make temporary credited overage billable.
- Teams and Enterprise charge a $0.25 per million token Cursor Token Rate on third-party requests, including BYOK, input, output and cached tokens. In our heavy example,
(20 + 20 + 200 + 4) × $0.25 = $61. This gross charge draws against the Other Models allowance; included usage and contract terms determine the invoice addition.
Claude Code provides managed settings for permissions, sandbox/network and extension policy. Pair inference policies with controls on what the agent executes locally.
Privacy is more than a no-training checkbox
Cursor Privacy Mode prevents covered code from being used for training. Cloud processing still occurs. With BYOK, Cursor sends requests through its backend for final prompt construction, and Cursor's Zero Data Retention policy does not apply. Review the gateway and provider terms separately.
Anthropic's Claude Code data policy distinguishes consumer Pro/Max settings from commercial Team, Enterprise and API use. Commercial data is not used for training by default. Consumer use depends on the account setting: Anthropic documents five-year retention with model-improvement sharing enabled and 30-day retention with it disabled. Standard commercial retention is 30 days. Qualified Enterprise zero data retention requires account-team enablement.
Local execution, inference location, training use, server retention and local transcripts are separate questions. Claude Code stores local session transcripts in plaintext by default. Server retention changes do not erase those transcripts, and a local CLI does not imply local inference.
Use both without duplicating every task
The official Claude Code extension supports Cursor. Keep Cursor for Tab, manual edits and native agents, then use Claude Code's extension or CLI for selected delegated jobs.
Try quick editing in Cursor and bounded investigations or refactors in Claude Code. Give concurrent writers separate worktrees or non-overlapping scopes.
Both entry plans together cost $20 + $20 = $40/month before extras. Retain both if the distinct workflow benefit justifies the second fee. Their subscription allowances remain separate.
Route supported model traffic through Requesty
Requesty centralizes model credentials, approved-model access and inference spending across supported tool paths. Keep the editor and agent workflow you prefer, then manage the model connection in one place.
We provide OpenAI-compatible and Anthropic-compatible endpoints in front of 600+ models. Use cost attribution by model, member and key, monthly key caps and approved-model controls to manage access and consumption across both tools.
Give each developer one personal Requesty key per tool. Requesty aggregates usage across a member's keys, with admin-set monthly per-user limits on every plan. Add key caps for each tool; team groups and group budgets require Enterprise.
With Claude Code installed and updated, use this Bash or Zsh configuration from our Claude Code integration guide. Our walkthrough on running Claude Code with an API key instead of a subscription covers precedence and switching back:
export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL="https://router.requesty.ai"
export ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN="YOUR_REQUESTY_API_KEY"
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL="anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5"
claudeThe Anthropic-compatible base has no /v1 suffix. Run /status to confirm the URL and credential source, then send a small prompt and verify it in Requesty logs. Settings-file environment values can override shell exports. Keep keys out of project settings.
To select another model through Requesty, change the model ID:
export ANTHROPIC_MODEL="openai/gpt-6-sol"
claudeBrowse the Requesty model catalog for available IDs.
Follow our Cursor integration guide:
- Open Cursor Settings, then Models and API Keys.
- Enter a Requesty key in OpenAI API Key.
- Enable Override OpenAI Base URL.
- Set
https://router.requesty.ai/v1. - Add a supported Requesty model ID, such as
anthropic/claude-sonnet-5-5, and select it explicitly. - Send a small prompt and confirm a Requesty log entry before relying on spend controls or model enforcement.
The OpenAI slot selects the compatible format; Cursor's BYOK help limits it to supported standard non-reasoning chat models. Requesty's override supports broader provider access, so verify the selected model and agent workflow before rollout.

Keep these coverage limits in the rollout checklist:
- Cursor: Tab remains native, and Auto may bypass the custom key. The IDE override does not establish coverage of CLI, all Cloud Agents, Bugbot or every helper service.
- Claude Code: gateway credentials bill Requesty, while cloud sessions and Slack keep native paths and Remote Control is unavailable. Desktop and IDE extensions need their own configuration; native Chrome requires active subscription login, so gateway authentication leaves it disabled even if you own a paid plan.
- Total developer cost: add vendor seats, native extra usage and separate add-ons to routed inference spend. Requesty logs cover requests that reach Requesty.
Validate a task in each client, configure model access and caps, then inspect the logs. Start with the Claude Code setup docs or Cursor setup docs.
Which should you choose?
Start with Cursor if inline completion and frequent visual editing justify keeping its editor, or you want native multi-provider choice without configuring a gateway.
Start with Claude Code if you want to keep your editor, compose terminal jobs and delegate tasks through its supported local or cloud surfaces.
Test both if parallel agent management or a combined editing-and-delegation workflow matters.
Add a gateway where supported for controlled model access, developer-specific credentials and attributed inference spend, while retaining native-service accounting and local execution controls.
Choose a default after the repository trial. The useful result is an accepted change with less human work, predictable spending and a data path your team can approve.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Claude Code better than Cursor?
- Neither tool wins every workflow. Start with Cursor for editor-native completion and visual editing, or Claude Code for delegated work in your existing editor and terminal automation. Compare accepted changes, review time and total cost on your own repository.
- Is Cursor or Claude Code cheaper?
- Both paid individual entry plans cost $20 per month in the US as of September 2026. Cursor uses monthly usage pools, while Claude Pro and Max have session and weekly allowances. Model choice, extra usage and API billing determine the final cost.
- Can I use Claude Code and Cursor together?
- Yes. Claude Code's VS Code extension supports Cursor, and you can also run the CLI in its terminal. Their subscriptions remain separate; use separate worktrees or non-overlapping scopes for concurrent editing tasks.
- Does Cursor use Claude models?
- Yes, Cursor supports Claude models including Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 as of September 2026. The same model can behave differently in Cursor and Claude Code because their instructions, tools, context handling and permissions differ.
- Can Claude Code use non-Claude models?
- Requesty documents alternate-model access through its Anthropic-compatible endpoint. Tool and feature compatibility depends on the selected model.
- Do Cursor and Claude Code have unlimited usage?
