Claude 5-hour limit: what changed for Max and Ultra

Last updated

As of November 2026, verified Claude Ultra accounts no longer have a 5-hour limit. Claude Pro and Max still have one, and all three plans retain weekly limits. Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Max and Max 20x to Ultra on October 30, with prices unchanged.

For heavy Claude Code users, the useful change is what happens during a long session: once Ultra is verified, the 5-hour stop is gone. The weekly allowance is still the ceiling, so the choice between a subscription and API pricing depends on how much you use and when you need it.

What changed for Max and Ultra?

The rename leaves the monthly prices where they were. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, while Max 5x is now called Max.

Pro costs $20 per month on monthly billing and keeps both its 5-hour and weekly limits. Max keeps both as well and has a separate weekly limit for Fable, according to Anthropic's Max plan guide.

The 5-hour window starts with your first message and resets five hours later, according to Anthropic's usage guide. You can check your next weekly reset time in Settings, then Usage.

Why the old 20x name was confusing

Max 20x launched in April 2025 with a 5-hour limit set at 20 times Pro. Weekly limits arrived in August 2025: the weekly allowance was set at 10 times Pro, while the 5-hour allowance stayed at 20 times, according to Sovereign Magazine.

That history helps with the current comparison. Max has five times Pro's weekly usage for $100 per month; Ultra has ten times Pro's weekly usage for $200. The weekly allowance per dollar is the same, but verified Ultra users can use more of that allowance without stopping at a 5-hour limit.

Ultra also includes $200 per month in API credits for building on the Claude Platform, compared with $100 on Max. Those credits cannot be used in Claude Code or the Claude apps.

How to check Ultra verification

An Ultra account that has not yet been verified has a temporary 5-hour limit. Anthropic says it removes that limit automatically once the account is verified. Verifying a phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not remove it (Anthropic's Ultra guide). Verification is automatic and uses factors including account and payment history, according to Sovereign Magazine.

To check your account:

  1. Open Settings in Claude.
  2. Open Usage.
  3. Look for the Current session bar. A verified Ultra account does not display it, according to Mixed News.

Max users can receive a Claude Code "wrapping up" allowance when they hit a 5-hour limit. Anthropic says that allowance does not apply to verified Ultra accounts because they no longer have that limit (Claude Code plan guide).

The weekly limit still applies to Claude Code

Claude Code, the web app, desktop and mobile draw from the same subscription usage pool. A long coding session and work in Claude chat can therefore use the same weekly allowance (Anthropic pricing).

Max has an all-model weekly limit and a separate weekly limit for Fable. Max and Ultra both include Fable for up to half of their weekly allowance, according to The Next Web.

How much work fits into a week? Wokey estimated that a week held about 5.7 full 5-hour windows on the $200 Max 20x plan, now Ultra. Its measurement covered October 26 to November 2, 2026, spanning the October 30 rename.

The accounts had a 92% cache-read rate, so the result is tied to that workload. For a developer who used to hit the 5-hour limit during a session, Ultra removes that interruption once verified. It does not add to the weekly allowance, so using the allowance faster can bring the weekly limit forward.

When does a subscription beat API pricing?

The cost comparison starts with the task. In our coding benchmark, updated October 29, 2026, we tested models on 129 private Go backend tasks. Opus 5.5 cost $0.93 per task and solved 92.2% of tasks; Sonnet 5.5 cost $0.52 per task, and Haiku 5.5 cost $0.11.

The table divides each plan price by the benchmark cost per task to show where API spend passes it.

ModelBenchmark cost per taskAPI tasks that exceed $100API tasks that exceed $200
Opus 5.5$0.93108216
Sonnet 5.5$0.52193385
Haiku 5.5$0.119101,819

Take Opus 5.5: $200 divided by $0.93 is about 215.05, so API spend passes $200 at the 216th task. Assuming 21 working days, that is roughly 10 tasks per working day.

These are our Go backend tasks, and the Opus run averaged 18.6 turns per task. Your Claude Code sessions may have different costs, and the subscription comparison only holds if the work fits within the plan's weekly and model limits. The table compares spending levels; it does not guarantee that a plan will cover that number of tasks.

On a per-solved-task basis, Opus cost $1.01 in the same benchmark. At that rate, API spend passes $100 at 100 solves and $200 at 199 solves.

Verdict

For work resembling our Opus benchmark, compare Ultra's $200 monthly price with about 216 API-priced tasks. Check your weekly usage before switching: the subscription can be cheaper at that volume, but the weekly cap still governs how much work it covers.

What to do when you hit a limit

When you reach a weekly limit, you can wait for it to reset. You can also enable usage credits, which let you continue at standard API rates.

Keep usage credits separate from the API credits included with Max and Ultra. The included credits are for building on the Claude Platform and cannot fund Claude Code or Claude app usage, including usage credits.

For a separate pay-as-you-go setup, you can run Claude Code on an API key. That gives you a different billing path from the subscription. It does not change the subscription's limits.

Set a spending cap for API usage

Requesty can route Claude Code through its API using a Requesty key. Usage is billed per token at the provider price plus 5%, and you can set a monthly spend cap on each API key or service account (Requesty API limits).

The Requesty Claude Code docs list these environment variables for the connection:

  • ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL points Claude Code to the Requesty endpoint.
  • ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN supplies your Requesty key.

For a team, one key per developer gives you a way to set individual ceilings. Our guide to per-key spend limits covers that setup.

Before changing your configuration, check which credentials Claude Code will use. If ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in your shell, Claude Code bills at API rates and ignores your subscription, according to Anthropic. Our Claude Code integration guide has the Requesty configuration.

In November 2026, verified Claude Ultra accounts have no 5-hour limit. Claude Pro and Max retain their 5-hour limits, and Ultra still has a weekly limit.
Does Claude Max still have a 5-hour limit?
Yes. Claude Max has a 5-hour limit and a weekly limit, each set at five times the usage of Claude Pro.
When does the Claude 5-hour limit reset?
The Claude 5-hour window starts with your first message and resets five hours later. You can check your next weekly reset time in Settings, then Usage.
