As of November 4, 2026, a Claude API 529 overloaded_error means the API is temporarily overloaded. Check Anthropic Status, then retry with bounded exponential backoff. A 429, missing credits, a workspace header error or an invalid key can each need a different fix.
529, some 429 responses and 500 can be transient, so give them a bounded recovery path. Account, credential and request errors need correcting before you send another attempt.
Which Claude API error are you seeing?
Read the status code, error type and message together. The table covers the direct API errors in Anthropic's error reference. If a gateway returns the error, diagnose it against that gateway's own key, balance and policy settings.
| Status or message | Likely cause | Retry decision | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
400 invalid_request_error | Invalid request format or content, missing workspace header, or a customer-set spend limit | Fix the reported issue first | Read the error message and check the request, workspace and limits |
401 authentication_error | Malformed, revoked or expired API key | Fix the credential first | Check the active key and replace it if needed |
402 billing_error | Billing or payment issue | Check billing first | Inspect the Claude Console balance and payment details |
403 permission_error | The key lacks permission for the resource | Fix access first | Check the key's permissions |
404 not_found_error | Resource not found, or workspace inaccessible to the key's identity | Fix the path, ID or access first | Check the endpoint and resource ID |
409 conflict_error | Concurrent modification or uniqueness conflict | Resolve the conflict first | Inspect the operation and error message |
413 request_too_large | Request exceeds the endpoint's byte limit | Reduce the request first | Check request size; the Messages API limit is 128 MB |
429 rate_limit_error | Rate, acceleration or spend limit | Depends on the limit | Check retry-after and the error details |
500 api_error | Internal API error | A bounded retry may help | Record the request ID and check status |
504 timeout_error | Processing timed out | Review the request before retrying | Consider streaming for long-running Messages requests |
529 overloaded_error | The API is temporarily overloaded | Use bounded retries | Check status and apply backoff |
How do you recover from 529 safely?
Anthropic says 529 can occur when traffic is high across users. The response applies to that request, and the disruption may be narrower than a global outage. See Anthropic's error documentation.
- 1Check Anthropic Status
Look for an incident on Anthropic Status. Whether an incident is listed or not, you still can't tell when your particular request will succeed.
- 2Record the request ID
Keep the error type, message and request ID with your diagnostics. Anthropic also returns a
request-idresponse header. Leave API keys and other secrets out of logs and support tickets. - 3Retry with a limit
Use exponential backoff with jitter: increase the delay between attempts and add randomness so requests do not all return at once. Set a maximum number of attempts and an overall deadline. Honor an applicable
retry-afterheader when one is supplied. - 4Test an approved fallback
If your application can use another route, test it with the same workload before relying on it. Check access, capacity, feature compatibility, data location and cost.
A retry budget in seconds
Take an initial request followed by up to 3 retries, with nominal delays of 1, 2 and 4 seconds. Our assumptions: every attempt fails immediately, no retry-after applies, and SDK and gateway retries are disabled.
The waiting time is 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 seconds, with at most 4 total attempts. Jitter, network time and processing time are excluded. In production, add jitter and set a deadline for the whole operation.
Now add one retry. Under the same doubling schedule, the fourth delay is 8 seconds, so the wait budget rises to 1 + 2 + 4 + 8 = 15 seconds across at most 5 attempts. That extra attempt more than doubles the waiting time before network and processing time.
An SDK or gateway can retry before your application receives an error. Anthropic's SDKs retry connection errors, 429 and 5xx responses, including 529, up to 2 times by default, configurable with max_retries (Anthropic docs); Requesty fallback policies can also have configured retries. Inspect your settings before adding another layer, and prevent repeated tool calls or other side effects when a request is restarted.
Why did Claude return 429?
A 429 can mean the organization sent requests too quickly, increased usage too quickly, or reached a limit. The response details tell you which case you have. Anthropic's rate limit documentation distinguishes the limits below.
| Limit | What to inspect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Throughput rate limit | retry-after | Wait at least that long and reduce or smooth traffic |
| Acceleration limit | The error details and recent increase in usage | Reduce or smooth the increase in traffic; honor retry-after when supplied |
| Tier spend cap | error.details.error_code is enforced_spend_limit_reached for Messages API requests; there is no retry-after header | Wait for access to resume or move to a higher tier |
| Customer-set organization or workspace limit | The error message and configured spending limit | Review the limit with an authorized account user |
For a throughput rate-limit 429, Anthropic supplies retry-after and says retrying before that period has elapsed will fail. A tier spend-cap 429 does not have that header; retries will fail until access resumes or the organization moves to a higher usage tier.
Customer-set limits can also return 400 invalid_request_error, while a Claude Code workspace limit can return 429, according to Anthropic's error reference. For retry design beyond Claude, see our guide to 429 errors.
How do you fix missing API credits?
Claude API billing is separate from paid Claude chat subscriptions. Anthropic says Max, Ultra and Team plans include monthly API credits under applicable terms; see Anthropic's billing explanation. Start by checking the balance for the organization making the request.
- 1Confirm the organization
Open the Claude Console and confirm that you are looking at the organization associated with the API key.
- 2Check the balance and payment details
Review the Console Billing page for the organization's balance and usage. Check payment details if the error points to a billing issue.
- 3Buy credits if needed
An Admin or Billing user can buy API credits from the Billing page. Anthropic says purchased credits are available immediately.
- 4Review reload and limits
Check whether auto-reload is configured and whether an organization or workspace spending limit is blocking usage. Auto-reload purchases credits when the balance falls below its configured threshold.
If the Console reports no available credits while you are creating a key, check the organization's balance and buy credits if needed before trying again. The purchase and auto-reload details are in Anthropic's API billing guide. For the full Console setup, see how to get a Claude API key.
How do you fix the workspace ID header error?
An API key that is not scoped to a workspace requires the anthropic-workspace-id header on each applicable request. If the header is missing, Anthropic returns 400 invalid_request_error. A key scoped to one workspace, including a legacy workspace key, runs in its own workspace when the header is omitted. See Anthropic authentication and workspaces.
- 1Check the key's scope
Determine whether the active API key is unscoped or belongs to a single workspace. If a suitably scoped key is available, using it is an alternative to sending the header.
- 2Find an accessible workspace ID
Get the
wrkspc_ID from an authorized workspace listing or from theanthropic-workspace-idresponse header on an existing successful workspace-resolved request. The Default Workspace appears in List Workspaces results only wheninclude_default=trueis supplied. - 3Send the header and check access
Send the ID in
anthropic-workspace-idand confirm the key's identity can access that workspace. An invalid ID format returns400; a nonexistent or inaccessible workspace returns404.
For an unscoped key, this Python SDK configuration sets the header from an environment variable:
import os
from anthropic import Anthropic
client = Anthropic(
api_key=os.environ["ANTHROPIC_API_KEY"],
default_headers={
"anthropic-workspace-id": os.environ["ANTHROPIC_WORKSPACE_ID"]
},
)Anthropic's API overview describes the workspace ID prefix and response header. Workload Identity Federation tokens select a workspace at token exchange. They don't use this header.
How do you fix an invalid key or malformed request?
A 401 points to authentication. A 400 can point to request content, workspace selection or a customer-set spending limit, so read the message before changing credentials. If the error comes from the CLI, check the active credential using our Claude Code API key setup guide.
For a missing workspace header, follow the workspace steps above.

What if the request fails after streaming starts?
An HTTP 200 tells you the response started. Anthropic documents that an error event can still arrive inside the stream.
Inspect stream error events as well as the initial HTTP status. Decide whether to preserve partial output, and avoid repeating tool side effects if you restart the request. Test recovery after partial output before relying on a fallback.
When should you use a fallback policy?
A fallback gives an application another route after an eligible provider error. Requesty documents 529 among the errors that can trigger a fallback, along with 429, 502 and 503. Its fallback policies try models in configured order, with configured retries before moving to the next model. See the Requesty error codes.
The backup still needs access and capacity. A different model or provider can also change output and tool behavior, so test the workload, cost and data location before putting it in the policy. Check the final error path when every route fails.
Use bounded retries for a transient Claude 529, and use a tested fallback when your application can accept an alternative route. Fix direct Anthropic credit, workspace and key errors in the relevant Console or account settings. Requesty cannot repair those settings for you.
To set up the fallback, choose compatible routes, order them in a Requesty fallback policy, configure the retries and test both recovery and final failure. For an existing Anthropic SDK integration, follow the SDK-specific base URL instructions for Requesty's Messages endpoint.
Frequently asked questions
- What does 529 overloaded mean in Claude?
- Claude API 529 overloaded_error means the API is temporarily overloaded. Check Anthropic Status and retry with a bounded backoff.
- How do I fix a Claude rate-exceeded error?
- For a Claude API throughput rate-limit 429, wait for the supplied retry-after period and reduce or smooth traffic. A tier spend-cap 429, identified by enforced_spend_limit_reached with no retry-after header, requires access to resume or the organization to move to a higher usage tier.
- Is Claude currently overloaded?
- Check Anthropic Status for current incidents. A single Claude API 529 can't tell you whether every model, region or customer is affected.
- How do I fix a missing anthropic-workspace-id header?
- For an unscoped Claude API key, send the anthropic-workspace-id header with the ID of an accessible workspace. You can also use an appropriately workspace-scoped key.
- Why does my Claude API account have no available credits?
- Check the balance and payment details for the correct Claude Console organization. An Admin or Billing user can buy Claude API credits if the organization needs them.
- Will a new API key fix Claude 529?
- A Claude API 529 indicates temporary overload. Replacing a valid API key is not the documented remedy.
